The script editor window of MacStim contains several tape recorder-like buttons at top left, a pop-up quick trial help button (the "?") and the "Help" button which you probably found to be reading this!
It also contains a simple text editor taking up the major part of the window. You can edit text (and enter, delete, paste, copy text) in it as you would any other word processor. You are limited to the current font, color and style, but can alter its size (under the Edit menu) in a limited way.
The main reasons for using a text editor were:
1. Ease in opening text files created with other applications;
2. Ease in cut and paste operations on standard or similar trials;
3. Comment lines can be added to make your trials more understandable;
4. Almost unlimited script lines (limited by available RAM);
5. Scripts can be saved and opened in other applications;
6. Saving in text file format facilitates entry of results into analysis applications, especially the tab delimited format, which is accepted by most spreadsheets and analysis applications.
You can save when the menu bar is present, and the script editor is the topmost one. Select the Save or Save As... menu items under the File menu. (If the Log window is active then you can also save this as a text file, and note that the Open command will then cause text to open into the Log window, including scripts!) A powerful find and/or replace system has been added to allow global search (and replace) facilities (including grep - see the Find... menu item under the Edit menu). Scripts opened from the desktop (ie double-clicked to launch MacStim) should open directly into the control window.
Further options are available under the Editor Setup... menu item (Control menu).
Menu Commands
The script editor has multiple options available under the "Edit" menu, including "Find..." (which includes full grep facility courtesy of FaceWare), "Next Case" (to find the next specified instance of a search string), "Editor Setup..." (for printing headers, special key mappings, display options), "Tabs-To-Spaces" (for a selection of text), and some varying font sizes. When you select some text with spaces in it, you can also convert the contiguous spaces to a single tab by choosing the "Copy As Table" option under the "Edit" menu. This is not however a fully fledged word processor.
